# kvalster!

Sorry for the English, but I don't have time to translate well.

I recently moved to Sweden from the US and we have two male rats here. They have developed mites and I do not know what to do! I would like to take them to the vet but we have a baby due in 23 days and would like to save as much money as possible. Is there any kind of over the counter medicine I can buy for these little guys? In the USA we can use horse dewormers such as ivermectin to clear up the mites and I have used them with great success but when my fiance went to the store they said that we need a prescription for those things. Thanks!

Most effective substances need a prescription from the vet.
The most usual thing you get when you have mites (often scabmites) is Stronghold but this too needs  trip to the vet.

There are some medicines/substances that doesn't demands a description but those aren't as effective and I haven't used any myself so I don't really know any good ones, I always use Stronghold.
If you look in the Articles and VSHR Ohyra you might find something (not sure though, was a while ago I looked at that one)

If your vet doesnt accept that you want stronghold you can get prescription free one called Frontline - many vets are afraid that mites will get resistant and doesnt want to prescribe stronghold due to that
